Let’s talk about intentional self-care

The maintenance we keep up on a daily basis is necessary for us to participate in polite everyday society, it’s almost compulsory - we do it without even thinking about it. Self care with intention is about caring for yourself deliberately. It exceeds those basic needs we all keep up on a daily basis. Intentional self care is about focusing on your wants and needs and creating a healthy balance between the two.

Studies show that one in three people feel guilty about taking time for themselves; a lot of people see self care as a selfish act, but we know it isn't. We know that in a world of hashtags, the importance of taking care of yourself gets lost in trends and it has become an indulgence or a privilege.

The focus on the needs of each individual has gotten lost in society’s idea of what self care actually is. Self care is not a quick fix. It's a lifelong journey with peaks and valleys, It’s a river that ebbs and flows. What self care looks like varies from person to person, but in today's society, self care has become homogenized and even monolithic one size fits all, but one size does not fit all in terms of self care. Self care is something that should be curated to the individual. No one knows what you need more than you. You are a unique being with unique needs. That is not to say that as human beings, we don't all have the same basic needs, but as individuals, our needs become more pronounced and distinct and understanding this distinction is the beginning of your self-care journey.

As an individual living sentient being, the self is a whole composed of the body, mind, spirit and soul. No one component is more important than the other. These parts come together to make you; you. When the focus is on one for too long, the other two lack and vice versa. Intentional self care or maintenance is the only way to sustain a balance between all three.
